In the older Tarot de Marseille, La Roue de Fortune shows a great wheel turned by a crank, with strange animal figures riding it — one climbing up one side, one tumbling down the other, and a crowned creature perched at the top, sceptre in hand. It is the medieval Rota Fortunae, the wheel of the goddess Fortuna: today’s king is tomorrow’s fallen beast, and the crank turns whether you will it or not. The image is a plain lesson in the impermanence of high and low alike.

Waite’s 1910 image layers on esoteric symbols: a great wheel bearing the letters T-A-R-O (and the Hebrew for the divine name) and the alchemical signs of the elements, with a snake descending on the left, the jackal-headed Anubis rising on the right, and a sphinx couched at the top holding a sword. In the four corners sit the winged figures of the fixed signs — angel, eagle, lion and bull — each reading a book. Ten is one full turn: the nine steps of the journey brought to a close and rolled over into a new beginning (ten reduces to one, the return of the Magician’s fresh start on a higher turn of the spiral). Traditional: Traditionally, especially in the Marseille reading, La Roue de Fortune spoke of Fortuna’s wheel and the fickleness of luck — success and elevation, yes, but always shadowed by the reminder that what rises must fall. Older sources read it as fate, unexpected change, and the workings of destiny, with a sterner undertone: prosperity that may not last, the vanity of clinging to high position, and the turn that brings the mighty low.

Modern: Modern decks and readers lean into the hopeful side: a lucky break, a positive turning point, opportunity and the reassurance that hard times pass. Today the Wheel is usually read as an encouraging card of good fortune and welcome change — with bad luck, downturns and resisting change reserved mainly for the reversal.
