Strength · La Force · Major Arcana XI

Quiet courage that gentles the lion — strength that persuades rather than forces.

  • NumberXI
  • Element / astrologyLeo
  • Yes / NoYes
  • UprightCourage, Compassion, Inner strength
  • ReversedSelf-doubt, Raw force, Burnout

Strength is the card of the soft hand on the wild thing. A woman stands beside a great lion and closes — or opens — its jaws not by wrestling it down but by touch, patience, and calm. She is not stronger than the lion in muscle; she is stronger in composure. That is the whole teaching of the card: real power is the mastery of your own reactions, not the domination of anyone or anything outside you.

When Strength turns up, you are being shown that the situation in front of you will not yield to brute effort. It will yield to steadiness. Whatever the lion is for you right now — a fear, a temper, an addiction, a person, a hard stretch you must simply outlast — the card promises you already have what it takes to meet it, provided you lead with courage tempered by compassion rather than with clenched force.

Strength upright meaning

Upright, Strength is inner fortitude made gentle. You have the courage to face something difficult and the self-control to do it without losing your temper or your kindness. This is the strength that endures — the patient, warm-blooded resolve that keeps showing up, keeps its cool under pressure, and wins people over instead of beating them down. It says you can handle far more than you fear, and you can handle it gracefully.

The card also speaks to taming your own instincts rather than caging them. The lion is not killed; it is befriended. Your passion, anger, desire, and animal energy are not the enemy — they are the source of your vitality once you learn to lead them. Strength drawn upright is a quiet vote of confidence: stay soft, stay steady, and the wild thing will follow your hand.

Strength reversed meaning

Reversed, Strength turns its gaze inward and finds the fuel running low. This can be self-doubt — the courage is there but you have stopped believing in it, so you shrink from the lion instead of laying a hand on it. It can be the raw, forced version of power: gritting your teeth, white-knuckling, trying to overpower a situation that only ever softens to patience. Force where gentleness was needed leaves everyone bruised, the lion most of all.

The reversal also warns of the cost of carrying too much for too long. Burnout, frayed nerves, a shorter fuse than usual, self-control that has quietly slipped — these are the lion getting loose because you are simply depleted. The remedy is not more effort but replenishment and self-compassion: be as gentle with yourself as the upright card asks you to be with everything else. Look to the surrounding cards to see whether the block is doubt, force, or sheer exhaustion.

Strength in love & relationships

If you’re single: For singles, Strength asks for courage of the tender kind — the bravery to stay open after disappointment and to lead with warmth rather than armour. You attract love not by playing it cool or hard-to-get but by being calmly, confidently yourself. It can point to a slow-burning connection that rewards patience, or to mastering the anxious impulses (over-texting, over-analysing) that sabotage early dating. Trust that a steady, gentle heart is magnetic.

If you’re in a relationship: In a relationship, Strength is the card of patient, compassionate love that weathers the rough patches. It counsels handling conflict with a soft hand — no raised voices, no ultimatums, just steady understanding — and it often marks a couple growing stronger by facing something hard together. Reversed, it can flag one partner running on empty, a temper worn thin, or the strain of holding the whole relationship up alone. Name the exhaustion kindly before it becomes resentment.

Strength in career

At work, Strength favours quiet leadership and grace under pressure. You get further by influence, patience, and calm competence than by throwing your weight around. It is a good omen for a demanding stretch you can outlast, for handling a difficult colleague or client with diplomacy, and for winning respect through consistency rather than bluster. Reversed, watch for burnout, self-doubt undermining a role you are actually good at, or the temptation to force an outcome that needs finesse.

Strength with money

Financially, Strength is about disciplined, patient control rather than dramatic moves. It rewards the steady hand: sticking to a plan, resisting panic in a downturn, and mastering the impulses that drive overspending. This is not a get-rich-quick card — it is the slow, resolute build. Reversed, it can point to willpower slipping around money, stress-spending, or the strain of carrying a financial burden that is quietly wearing you down.

Strength for health & wellbeing

For health and wellbeing, Strength is a genuinely encouraging card of resilience, recovery, and the vitality that comes from a body and mind in cooperation. It supports the patient discipline of healing — showing up for the routine, the physio, the recovery — and mastering habits gently rather than through punishing willpower. Reversed, it is one of the clearer burnout signals in the deck: depleted reserves, frayed nerves, running on fumes. Rest is not weakness here; it is the strength.

Strength as feelings, advice & intentions

As feelings

As how someone feels about you, Strength suggests a deep, steady, warm-hearted affection — not a fiery infatuation but something more grounded and enduring. They admire your character and feel safe around you, and their feelings have the patience to wait and grow. It can also mean someone gathering the courage to be open with you, mastering their own nerves before they speak.

As advice

As advice, Strength says lead with the soft hand. Meet whatever you are facing with courage and patience rather than force, and master your own reactions before you try to change anything outside you. Be gentle — with others and, crucially, with yourself. You are stronger and more capable than your fear is telling you; endure with grace, and the lion will follow.

As intentions

Drawn to show someone’s intentions, Strength points to steady, benevolent, patient purpose — they mean you well and are willing to take their time. They intend to handle things gently and to earn trust rather than demand it. There is self-mastery in the intent: this is someone trying to act from their better nature rather than their impulses.

Strength in past, present & future positions

Symbolism

In Waite’s 1910 image, a serene woman in a white robe stands over a tawny lion, her hands resting on its jaws — opening or closing them, the gesture is deliberately calm rather than violent. Above her head floats the lemniscate, the sideways figure-eight of infinity we first meet on The Magician, marking her as a channel of limitless, effortless power. A chain of roses circles her waist and crowns her, showing that desire and instinct, disciplined by love, become a thing of beauty rather than a beast to be feared. In the older Tarot de Marseille this card is La Force, where a similar woman calmly forces open (or holds shut) the lion’s mouth, her wide-brimmed hat drawn in the same infinity curve.

The heart of the symbolism is that the lion is not slain. Strength is never the picture of a hero standing over a dead beast; it is the picture of a partnership, wildness led by gentleness. In our bold minimalist Marseille woodcut house style we keep the essentials in strong black line: the standing figure, the great cat leaning into her hand, the crowning loop of infinity, and the flowering chain — force made tender, rendered without clutter.

Numerology

Strength is eleven (XI) in this deck. Eleven is a master number and the first of the ‘doubled’ numbers — a one standing beside a one, twin pillars, a doorway. It carries the drive and initiative of the number one raised to a higher octave: not raw beginning but mastered will, the self standing beside its own animal nature as an equal. Reduced, eleven becomes two (1 + 1), which softens the picture with balance and partnership — fitting for a card about cooperating with the lion rather than conquering it.

Element & astrology

Strength is a Fire card ruled by Leo, the lion itself — fixed fire, warm, proud, big-hearted and courageous. Leo governs the heart, and this is very much a card of heart-strength: steady, radiant, generous under pressure. In the Golden Dawn’s Book T the card is assigned the Hebrew letter Teth (meaning ‘serpent’) and the 19th path on the Tree of Life, joining Chesed (mercy) to Geburah (severity) — the exact meeting-point of gentleness and power that the card portrays. It was Waite who moved Strength from its older place at VIII to XI, so that the Leonine card would follow Justice.

Traditional vs. modern interpretation

Traditional: In older and Marseille readings, La Force spoke plainly of fortitude, physical and moral courage, and the power to conquer — the strong will subduing the base appetites. It could carry a sterner edge: the need to bridle a violent temper, the danger of unchecked passion, or the sheer bloody-minded endurance demanded to overcome an enemy or an obstacle. Strength here was a virtue you had to summon against a real threat, not a gentle affirmation.

Modern: Modern readers keep the courage but foreground the compassion. Today Strength is most often read as inner strength, emotional resilience, patience, and the ‘soft power’ of influence over force — taming the lion by befriending it rather than beating it. The emphasis has shifted from conquering an outer enemy to mastering the self, and the card is generally seen as one of the deck’s most reassuring.

Strength in a spread — a worked example

Imagine a situation–challenge–guidance reading for someone dreading a confrontation at work:

Read as one story, the reading is almost self-explaining: there is real conflict (Five of Wands) and a real fear of explosion (The Tower), but the way through is not to match the heat — it is Strength’s steady composure. The pivotal card tells you the outcome turns entirely on how you carry yourself: gentle the lion, and the Tower need not fall.

Strength combinations

Meaning shifts with the cards beside it. A few distinctive Strength pairings:

Strength + Chariot — two kinds of willpower side by side — The Chariot drives forward by force of will, Strength wins by inner mastery. Together: unstoppable resolve that still keeps its cool. Push, but stay gentle.Strength + Sun — two solar cards (Leo and the Sun itself) — radiant confidence, vitality, and joyful courage. A wonderfully warm pairing: you have both the strength and the shine to succeed openly.Strength + Devil — the lion of desire faces its shadow — Strength is your power to master an addiction, temptation, or toxic attachment with patience rather than shame. You can loosen the chain.Strength + Moon — facing fear in the dark — The Moon stirs anxiety and illusion, Strength gives you the steady nerve to walk through it without panicking. Courage when you cannot see the whole road.

Meditation & affirmation

Affirmation: “I meet what is wild in me and around me with a calm, gentle, unshakeable hand.”

Meditation: Sit quietly with Strength. Picture the lion that is loudest in your life right now — a fear, a craving, a temper. Instead of fighting it, imagine laying a calm hand on its mane and breathing slowly until it settles. Ask: what would change if I led this with gentleness instead of force?

Frequently asked questions

Is Strength a yes or no card?

Strength is a yes — but a ‘yes, with patience and courage.’ It favours situations you can win through steadiness, compassion, and self-control rather than force. Endure gracefully and the answer tends to be favourable.

What does Strength mean in love?

Patient, warm-hearted, resilient love. For singles it means leading with gentle confidence and trusting a slow burn; for couples, handling conflict with a soft hand and growing stronger by facing hard things together. Reversed, watch for burnout or a temper worn thin.

What does Strength reversed mean?

Usually self-doubt, raw force where gentleness was needed, or plain burnout — the lion getting loose because you are depleted. The cure is replenishment and self-compassion: be as gentle with yourself as the upright card asks you to be with everything else.

Why is Strength number XI and not VIII?

Older decks (including the Marseille) number Strength VIII and Justice XI. Waite deliberately swapped them so that Strength, the Leonine card, would follow Justice and better fit the astrological order — which is why most modern Rider–Waite–Smith decks show Strength as XI.

Is Strength a Major or Minor Arcana card?

Strength is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards (XI). Major Arcana cards point to bigger life themes and turning points rather than everyday details.

What is the element or astrology of Strength?

Strength is associated with Leo.
