Elemental Dignities

When two cards sit side by side, their elements interact — strengthening, weakening, or complicating each other. This technique, from the Golden Dawn, adds a powerful layer of nuance to any reading. Here's the rule, and a checker to try it.

The rule of dignities

• Same element → powerfully strengthened (two Fire cards intensify each other).
• Fire + Air and Water + Earth → friendly; they strengthen one another.
• Fire + Water and Air + Earth → opposing; they weaken or complicate.
• Fire + Earth and Air + Water → neutral; a mixed, workable pairing.

The elements of tarot

Wands are Fire, Cups are Water, Swords are Air, and Pentacles are Earth. Each Major Arcana card carries an element too (via its planet or zodiac sign). Deepen this in the four suits and try pairings in the combination lookup.
