In the older Tarot de Marseille, this figure is the Reine de Coupes — an enthroned queen holding a single covered cup, calm and dignified among the court of chalices. The Marseille queen is less overtly mystical than Waite’s, but the essentials are already present: a sovereign woman paired with the vessel of the emotions, the feminine authority of the suit of hearts, holding the cup of feeling with quiet composure.

Waite’s 1910 image deepened her into the great empath: she sits on a throne carved with water-babies and shells at the very edge of the sea, where the shore of the conscious mind meets the ocean of the unconscious. Uniquely among the cups, her cup is an ornate, lidded chalice shaped like a church, topped with angel handles — her deepest feelings are held close, sacred and contained. She gazes at it, absorbed, symbolising a soul turned toward the inner world.
