In the Tarot de Marseille this card is L’Amoureux, and it is strikingly a card of choice rather than simple romance: a young man stands between two women — often read as one older and dutiful, one younger and alluring — while above him a winged Cupid draws his bow, arrow poised to loose. The man’s gaze is caught between the two figures, freezing the eternal moment of decision. The older name for the card, sometimes given as the ‘lover’ at a crossroads, makes plain that its heart is a choice with consequences, watched over by love itself.

Waite’s 1910 image lifts the scene into paradise: a naked man and woman stand in a garden, an angel (Raphael) with fiery wings blessing them from above, the sun blazing behind. Behind the woman rises the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil with its serpent; behind the man, the Tree of Life aflame — Eden before the fall, and the choice that defines humanity. The Lovers is six, and six is the number of harmony, balance, and relationship — the first number that is the sum of its own divisors (1 + 2 + 3), which is why the ancients called it the first ‘perfect’ number. Where the five of the Hierophant introduced tension and the human question, six resolves it into union and equilibrium. Traditional: Traditionally, especially in the Marseille reading, L’Amoureux was above all a card of choice and its trials — the young man torn between two attachments, between virtue and desire, duty and pleasure. Marriage and union were read here, but never without the shadow of the fork in the road and the consequences of choosing wrongly.

Modern: Modern readers foreground the loving union — soulmates, deep attraction, and relationships of real intimacy — while keeping the theme of choice front and centre, now framed as a decision that must align with your personal values. The moralising of the older tradition softens: rather than virtue versus vice, contemporary readings speak of choosing wholeheartedly and authentically. The reversed meanings — disharmony, misalignment, avoided decisions — carry much of the card’s cautionary weight today.
