How to read a card meaning in context

A keyword tells you what a card tends to mean. What it means for your question depends on three things:

• Position in the spread. The same card reads differently as “the situation” than it does as “the obstacle” or “the outcome.” Let the position frame the keyword.
• Surrounding cards. Cards colour one another. The Three of Swords next to the Sun softens; next to the Ten of Swords it deepens. Read the neighbours, not just the single card.
• Upright vs. reversed. A reversal often signals the energy blocked, internalised, delayed, or overdone — rarely a flat opposite. The full card page spells out both.

A worked example

Say you draw The Tower in the “near future” position of a three-card spread, with the Ace of Pentacles beside it. The lookup gives you The Tower's keywords — sudden change, upheaval, revelation.
