i get asked this constantly by people just starting out and i want a thread i can point them to instead of just giving my own answer every time. so, which deck do you think has the clearest imagery for actually learning the meanings? not prettiest, not rarest, clearest. the deck where a beginner can look at the Five of Cups and more or less feel what it means before they've read a single guidebook entry. i have my own pick but i'll hold it so i don't steer the thread. scenes on every card matter more than art style here i think, but convince me otherwise. what did you learn on and would you recommend it today?

ok i'll break my own rule. i learned on plain Rider-Waite-Smith, the cheap mass-market one, and i still think it's the best teacher because nearly every card is a little scene with a person doing something. the Pentacles especially, you read the story right off the picture. not my prettiest deck but the one i reach for when i need an answer

RWS for the head, but the deck that teaches you fastest is the one you actually feel something in front of. i learned the emotional half of the cards from a soft watercolor deck, i'd sit with a card and feel it before thinking. maybe two decks, one with clear scenes for the grammar and one that makes you feel 🌸

i started on the Light Seer's, modern but every card shows a scene so i learned fine. loving the deck kept me practicing

co-sign the Light Seer's. i tried to learn on a gorgeous all-art deck with no scenes, just vibes, and i stared at the Five of Wands like it owed me money. zero clue for a week. went back to a deck with little people doing little things and it clicked instantly. turns out my intuition needs stick figures lol

scenes are training wheels you never have to take off honestly. a deck that shows you the story is doing half the reading with you

dumb q but does it count as learning if im just reading the little scenes and not memorizing keywords. am i doing it wrong or

not wrong that IS reading. i memorized keywords for years and read worse for it, too busy reciting to actually look. keep reading the scene

slightly off the main question but fading_echoes and pageofcups just hit on something i think matters more than deck choice. there are two ways in, the scholar's road where you learn the system first and then look at the card, and the reader's road where you look at the card first and let the system catch up. neither is wrong but most books are written for the first road and most people's intuition runs on the second. i spent two years thinking i was bad at tarot when really i was just forcing a right-brain gift through a left-brain manual. the deck with clear scenes matters precisely because it lets the reader's road work. you're not skipping the learning, you're learning in the order your mind actually prefers. memorize the keywords later, once the pictures have already taught you what they mean

ok so for the beginner lurking this thread, is the move basically grab a Rider-Waite or Light Seer's, ignore the little white book at first, and just describe what you see on each card out loud? asking because i want to send this to my sister who keeps saying she's too dumb for tarot and she is NOT 💛

that's the move luna. one card a day, describe the scene, write the feeling before you look anything up. tell your sister she's got this 💛
