not catholic but grew up evangelical, same gremlin. what helped was treating cards as reflection and journaling, not fortune telling. took the fear right out of it

the art history angle helped me most. so much tarot imagery is straight up christian, the Hierophant is literally a pope figure, the High Priestess echoes marian imagery, Judgement is a resurrection scene. these decks came out of catholic europe. seeing it as part of that visual tradition instead of opposed to it made the guilt a lot quieter

i'll give the long version since this one mattered to me too. first the practical thing: nothing in tarot asks you to believe anything that competes with your faith. the cards don't have agency, they don't predict a fixed future, they're a mirror you hold up to your own situation. i read them the way some people use examen or journaling, a structured way to sit with a question honestly. second the history, which others touched on, the imagery is soaked in christian symbolism because that's the world it grew from. where i'd be careful, gently, is the fortune telling frame. if you find yourself outsourcing decisions to the cards or anxiously pulling over and over for reassurance, that's worth examining, not because it's sinful but because it's not good for you. used as reflection it's never felt in tension with anything i value. if the guilt stays loud though, a kind priest or thoughtful faith community might settle it better than a forum can

i grew up catholic too, altar serving and the whole thing. i carried that exact gremlin for years and i'll tell you honestly what shifted it for me. i stopped asking the cards to tell me the future and started asking them to show me what i already knew but was avoiding. the moment it became about honesty instead of prediction, the guilt just had nothing to hold onto. i wasn't trying to peek at god's plan, i was trying to be truthful with myself. i still light a candle, i still have a complicated relationship with the church i was raised in, and tarot sits alongside all of that without any war. it took me probably two years to get there and a lot of pulls where i felt like i was doing something wrong. be patient with yourself, the gremlin gets quieter

hollowmoon said this beautifully and i want to ask OP a gentle question off the back of it. when the guilt comes up, can you tell what it's actually about? sometimes it's genuine faith, a real conviction you hold and want to honour, and that deserves respect, maybe tarot isn't for you and that's completely fine. but sometimes it's inherited fear, a voice from childhood that isn't really yours, just installed early and loud. those two feel almost identical from the inside but they want very different things from you. one asks you to stop, the other asks you to grow past it. it's worth sitting quietly and asking which one is actually talking. no need to answer here, just something to turn over. and if it's the first kind, nobody here will think less of you for walking away

such a kind way to put it joanne. from the old lady corner, i hid my first deck from my mother for thirty years thinking it was wicked. when she passed i found rosary beads and a worn tarot deck in the same drawer. she'd made her peace decades before i did. people are more layered than the rules handed to them

oh that drawer detail got me. mom of two and catholic-ish here, i keep my cards in the same box as the kids' baptism candles, never thought about it till now. for me it's all just ways of paying attention to my life. church gave me some, tarot gave me others. they don't fight in my house

this is one of the warmer threads i've read here. for OP, if it helps, don't read on anything that makes the guilt spike, at least at first. keep it to daily reflection pulls, one card, what should i notice today. low stakes, nothing fate-y. let your nervous system learn it's safe before the big questions. the fear fades faster that way

something tender in all this. the way i hold it, the guilt itself is a card worth reading. pulled as a feeling it'd be the 9 of swords, that 3am worry that's mostly inherited and rarely true. the cards aren't hurting you, the old voice telling you you're bad is. start there, gently. you're allowed to be curious without betraying anything

i'm going to go slightly sideways here because this thread keeps calling it a sin and i want to name something. so much of what gets called spiritual guilt is really just control that was handed to us young. i'm not here to bash anyone's faith, genuinely, plenty of people find deep good in theirs. but there's a difference between a belief you chose as an adult and a fear that got pressed into you before you could consent to it. tarot has a way of surfacing that distinction, which is maybe why it rattles people who were raised strict. it asks you to look at what you actually think, and for some of us that was never allowed. so if this hobby is quietly teaching you that your own mind is a safe place to visit, that's not the sin talking. that's the opposite of it. anyway, off my box now

velvet said that so well, chills. my grandma read cards AND went to mass every sunday and saw zero conflict. she was onto something honestly

grandma supremacy in this thread 💛

gonna be the odd one out. if your faith genuinely says don't, then don't, no reframing as 'just reflection' gets around that. i'm not religious so it's easy for me, but i don't love watching people talk someone out of a real conviction to keep them in a hobby. OP, if it's your belief not old fear, respect it. no deck's worth betraying yourself

for the record, the church's objection shifted over the centuries and was more about divination and 'commerce with spirits' than the cards themselves. tarot began as a card game, tarocchi, in 15th century catholic italy. divinatory use came much later, 18th century france, Court de Gébelin and Etteilla. so 'is it a sin' never had one stable answer even within the tradition it supposedly offends

catholic AND scorpio, double guilt whammy lol. deciding my spirituality is mine to build is what fixed it. kept what i loved, left the fear

agreed. saving this whole one

gentle question, when you picture giving tarot up entirely, is the feeling relief or loss? that tells you more than any argument in here will
