Is self-reading a bad idea for beginners?

ok so ive seen people say beginners shouldnt read for themselves because youll just see what you want to see!! but i learn by doing?? is self-reading actually a bad idea when youre starting out or is that overblown. genuinely asking

its not a bad idea, its just the hardest mode. you will bend cards toward your hope, everyone does at first. the fix isnt to stop, its to write the reading down before you interpret it and read it back a week later. past-you is a more honest reader than present-you. thats how you learn your own tells
